Poilievre's own seat could be in play and Trump's bluster is back: Day 34

Then there's the little matter of Trump mentioning the 51st state idea on a call Carney told reporters had been respectful of Canada's sovereignty...

The election is just four days away, so naturally, Trump had to make a buzzer beater appearance.

The U.S. president decided to spew out his favourite offensive musings about Canada on Wednesday, sending yet another series of shockwaves through the election campaign.

Couple that with Radio Canada’s reporting that Trump had, in fact, mused about Canada’s potential statehood in a call with Carney — despite the prime minister’s past assertions Trump had “respected Canada’s sovereignty” in the call — and you’ve got a recipe for a U.S.-dominated day on the campaign trail.

While that’s probably not the kind of conversation Poilievre’s team wants to see dominating the day, given the polling boon anything Trump-related gives to Carney, there’s a good chance the Conservative leader was glad no one asked him about the other big story that emerged over the past 24 hours.

Both the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star reported that Pierre Poilievre could face a tight race in the Carleton riding he’s held since 2004. Yes, really.

Let’s talk about it all.
