The fact that people are accusing Carney of somehow not fully disclosing Trump's 51st state rhetoric on one phone call goes to show 2 things. 1. How desperate these people are in trying to find a gotcha moment on Carney but have come up empty so far. Carney has no reason to hide what Trump said; in fact it would have been in his interest to emphasize that Trump is reiterating the 51st state BS. So what exactly are they accusing him of? Not helping his own campaign enough? 2. It is either wishful thinking or bad faith to think that just because Trump did not specifically spew the 51st state BS on a few days that he must have somehow abandoned that idea. Some corporate media even tried to sell an illusion of a "quieting down" of the Trump threat which they attributed as the reason for the minor softening of the Liberal lead. So when Trump ran his mouth again and burst that illusion bubble, they got angry at Carney. Just because Carney didn't specifically mention that Trump was spewing his usual nonsense on one phone call, and he wasnt clear on what he meant by "Trump respects Canada's sovereignty", doesn't entitle anyone in good faith to be mistaken about Trump's desire to make Canada the 51st state. Trump recognizes Canada as a sovereign state, but wants to strip Canada of its sovereignty. What Carney said was not untrue, but CTV called it "dishonesty". So pathetic.
I’m sorry but this parsing of words is dumb. He’s the PM and no PM should give specific details of calls with leaders. That’s a really bad take. Political diplomacy stills exists, despite Trump.
I wrote this comment in response to another Substack post, it applies here as well, since numerous journalists are trying to create scandal where there isn’t one: I don’t understand why anyone is shocked today by did he/didn’t he say “51st state” on the call with Carney. Carney said Trump respected Canada’s sovereignty ON THE CALL. We all saw the absence of mention of “51st state” or “governor” in Trump’s tweets after and since the call. This was a change from before the call. That doesn’t mean Trump changed his mind. Carney never said that he did. Did people really think the threat was gone? Come on. Carney has been campaigning with a focus on the very real threat to our sovereignty. It is clear this never went away. Just because something doesn’t appear in social media for a week or so doesn’t mean it’s gone. The media is grasping at anything to try and create drama for Carney.
I think I'm sick of PP and his inability to speak in sentenses without breaking into "spontaneous mantras", but even more sick of the toxic stupidity of his style of politics, the toxicity of his party and the susceptibility of so many "casually informed" (emphasis on the quotations around "informed") members of the electorate to them.

I agree. This is bending too far in "trying to be fair to both sides".

As if there isn't enough drama in the air....
I still fear the election is too close to call unfortunately
Good analysis. Surprising anyone should question Carney's statement and not the supreme liar - Trump.
