Canada's timid response to the latest U.S. attack on international law

At least we're willing to pay lip service to the value of international law...

Canada’s foreign affairs minister has issued an extremely tepid response to the United States putting sanctions on a UN special rapporteur, Francesca Albanese.

I reached out to the Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand’s office yesterday to ask for her response to the news that U.S. secretary of state Marco Rubio slapped sanctions on the UN’s special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory.

He claimed this was because of Albanese’s “illegitimate and shameful efforts to prompt International Criminal Court action against U.S. and Israeli officials, companies, and executives.”

Several international law experts and human rights lawyers took to social media immediately after the announcement to share that this appears to violate international law and agreements.

When pressed on this today, however, Anand didn’t even immediately defend those agreements — not until she was pushed in a follow up.

Here’s what she said.
