U.S. President Donald Trump just pardoned rioters involved in the Jan. 6 insurrection.
With a swipe of his marker, he unleashed the former leaders of far-right extremist groups who had been staring down decades in jail.
This sent a message, according to extremism expert Amarnath Amarasingam: “loyalty to Trump is going to matter, and be rewarded, more than anything else going forward.”
The action won’t only embolden extremists in the United States, though.
White nationalist and far-right extremist groups in Canada and Europe have also been busy. They’re increasingly involved in things called “Active Clubs.”
Think “fight club” but way, way more racist.
Not only have they been “training” by getting together and punching each other in the face, but they’re also linking up with other like-minded groups on both sides of the border.
It’s a scary, serious and rising threat to our democracy.
Let’s talk about it.
