When the government announces something at 10:00pm on the Sunday night of a long weekend, you know it’s probably not something that makes them look good.
Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.
Last night, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government announced that Canada was going to rescind our Digital Services Tax (DST).
This came following a vocal mantrum from U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday, in which he threatened to terminate “ALL discussion on trade with Canada, effective immediately” over the levy.
It’s the latest instance of Trump thrashing Canadians around like a rag doll when he decides one of our policies isn’t to his liking. It’s also another instance of Carney caving to Trump’s demands.
Let me tell you what happened here, what smarter people than me told me about it, and why it’s, sadly, really mortifying for our country.
P.S. I’m going to take tomorrow off, as my head is currently full of snot (TMI?) and it’s also a holiday! So I hope you all have a great day full of sunshine, loved ones and rest, and I’ll be back on Wednesday ❤️
