The Liberals can't quit the "radical centre"

The main refrain to emerge from the party after Trudeau's resignation announcement is that the Liberals had moved too far to the left. Fascinating.

Former prime minister Jean Chrétien went on CTV Question Period over the weekend and laid out a bold new vision for the Liberal Party’s path forward: the “radical centre.”

This comes amid a steady drumbeat of Liberal MPs stating the party moved “too far to the left,” that they need to be “fiscally responsible,” and that Trudeau’s successor will have to be “middle of the road.”

Hoooo boy. Nothing says bold, brave politics in an era of rising populism like….embracing centrism.

This strikes me as a product of Liberals internalizing Poilievre’s messaging (which, to be fair, many Canadians have internalized too).

But what they should be internalizing is what Canadians are actually telling them. In my opinion, it’s not that they all want Poilievre.

It’s that they want to be heard.

Let me explain.
