Ring doorbell footage: Ontario minister appears to lie about Greenbelt scandal

“That’s fake news. Heard about AI?" That's how Ontario Procurement Minister Todd McCarthy responded to a constituent voicing concerns about a very real 2018 video

When the Ontario Procurement Minister knocked on Ontario resident Lisa Crompton’s front door on Feb. 12, he might not have realized he was being recorded.

But he was, and she shared the footage with me — footage that appears to show him lying about the Greenbelt scandal.

When Crompton confronted McCarthy about Ford’s since-reversed decision to open up the protected lands for housing developments, she pointed out that she had seen a video of Ford “talking to developers beforehand saying that he was going to open up the Greenbelt.”

Crompton was referencing a 2018 video, leaked from a closed-door campaign event Ford held at the time, in which the Ontario PC Leader promised to open up a “big chunk” of the Greenbelt.

In that same video, he said he had been talking to “some of the biggest developers in this country” and that this was “their idea as well.”

That video was widely reported on at the time. But McCarthy, speaking to Crompton on Feb. 12, called her assertion “fake news.”

“Heard about AI? Be careful…people can make anyone look like anything,” he told her.

In today’s video, we’ll watch this footage together — and I’ll tell you why this matters.
