Is Pierre Poilievre's tie to Shopify broligarchs a conflict of interest?

The broligarchs at Shopify are supporting Ana Poilievre's newest cause -- meanwhile, the Conservative leader is publicly lavishing praise on the e-commerce company.

Canadians watched in horror as Elon Musk bought influence in the United States, thanks in large part to the country’s billionaire-friendly political financing rules.

Turns out we should be watching our own backyard, too.

Because, while currying favour with politicians can be more complicated here in Canada, it looks like Musk’s Canadian counterparts are getting creative.

Enter Shopify, Canada’s second-largest company.

Shopify’s top brass have become increasingly vocal about their right-wing views on Twitter. Its CEO even shared the same meme Musk has boosted about the label of “far-right” becoming overly broad.

It’s no surprise, then, that Pierre Poilievre recently praised the company, calling it “spectacular.”

What is surprising, however, is what happened just weeks before Poilievre posted that message of support. His wife Ana glowingly shared the news that her brand new organization had a “perfect match” that would be supporting her cause.

That match? It’s Shopify.

That’s interesting. Because here’s what the Conflict of Interest Code says:

“Members of the House of Commons and their family members are not allowed to accept gifts or other benefits that might reasonably be seen to have been given to influence the Members in the exercise of a duty or function of their office.”

Let’s talk about it.
