Welcome to the third full day of the election campaign.
After two full days of headlines that put Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party in the hot seat, Liberal Leader Mark Carney got a taste of heat himself. The big story of the day was about investment funds Carney oversaw while at Brookfield — funds that were, in part, registered in the tax haven of Bermuda.
That’s according to this CBC scoop.
However, when asked about this, Carney actually had a pretty good explanation: the Bermuda registration means the beneficiaries of these funds (pensioners including teachers, retirees, and municipal employees) aren’t dealing with double taxation.
Instead, they do pay tax in Canada, once, when the funds are pulled out.
This took some of the wind out of the sails of journalists who — including myself — spent the day trying to understand international asset management to get a sense of whether this story is actually a scandal, or a non-issue.
Still, opposition pounced — and Carney bit back.
In fact, the Liberal leader had some choice words for Poilievre today: he called him a “conspiracy theorist.”
Another dramatic day on the campaign trail. Let’s discuss!
