Canada announces sanctions on far-right Israeli ministers. Here's what that does and doesn't do

I also have an update on my request to the government about the Madleen and more.

That Canada is sanctioning two far-right Israeli cabinet ministers for “inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank”

Specifically, two far-right cabinet ministers in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government — but not Netanyahu himself — are now inadmissible to Canada, and they can’t do any business in Canada or with Canadians at home or abroad.

The announcement came down this morning, in a joint statement alongside the UK, Norway, Australia and New Zealand.

And it’s actually the fourth round of sanctions Canada has imposed on what the government describes as “facilitators of extremist settler violence against civilians in West Bank.”

Personally, I got the news in my inbox in response to my questions about what Canada is doing about the Madleen — the boat carrying humanitarian aid — being intercepted and the folks on board being detained.

I’m still waiting on a full response to that. So in the meantime, let me break down what this latest announcement does (and doesn’t) do.
