There’s a white nationalist conference happening in Canada this weekend. Yes, really — and it’s as cringe as it sounds.
I’m very grateful to fellow journalist Christy Somos for giving me a tip about this, because now I get to mock these guys for the next five minutes.
Before I laugh at these guys too much, though, I do want to acknowledge that the hate underpinning this meetup is very real and genuinely concerning.
I reached out to Elizabeth Simons from the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, who are basically the top experts in Canada when it comes to far-right extremism and hate, and she had this to say.
"It's clear from some of the planned speakers and the social media channels marketing the conference that this event is intended for white nationalists and neo-Nazis,” Simons told me.
“Content on the social media accounts include neo-Nazi imagery and symbols.
Their goals appear to include networking and movement building to advance a fascist, anti-democratic and exclusionary worldview, couched in how they perceive history and philosophy."
So yeah, it’s bad.
On top of that, you know those fascist fight clubs that I’ve reported on for ages — the ones CBC finally just covered too?
Well, they’re boosting this event.
Let’s talk about it all.
