Given Carney's prior views and records on climate change and fossil fuel, he deserves some benefit of the doubt. Addressing climate change is a long term goal, but there are immediate existential threats to Canada and lives of Canadians. If he is dangling a carrot in front of troublemakers to keep them at bay while he focuses on the immediate threats, that is a good strategy.
I’d have less of a problem with his strategy to block Smith/Trump and others if he wasn’t arguing decaronized barrels being a real solution. Carbon capture is BS and really won’t make a dent if we are producing more oil.
The other issue is climate change can no longer be a long term goal since warnings about it have been raised since the 1970s. We are way past the long term goal stage.
I don't think Carney said decarbonized oil pipeline is a solution; he said it is in Canada's interest. There is no solution to climate change, because we are way past the point of reversing course. Even if we stop all emission tomorrow, we are still going to suffer the consequences from climate change. The best we can do is to slow it down. The reality is no one is willing or capable of shutting down all fossil fuel production immediately, so the choices are between phasing out fossil fuel and allowing new projects, and phase out would be good only if you can actually do it politically. Carney has much more immediate problems. On one hand he has to minimize the worst consequences from the Trump tariffs, and on the other hand build up Canada's economic independence. He has less than 4 years to prove himself and fend off MAGA Maple from coming back in the next election. If his political calculation is that he has to compromise on new pipelines now in order to Trump-prove the economy fast enough to prevent Canada from falling into the hands of a Trump-minion, I don't like it but I also don't know what better alternative there is. There is no climate to talk about under an authoritarian dictatorship. Politics is a game of compromise, and no one will like it 100%.
If we are goi g to break the extreme partisanship ripping apart democracies then media have to stop pigeon holing left or right, or comments like "is he a Liberal". Trying to govern on complex issues requires facts, a recognition of complexity and often a need for compromise. Right wing parties offer "strict dad" solutions of right or wrong, certainty and punishment for mistakes. George Lakoff if you are familiar with his writing

Carbon capture is a fairy tale that oil and gas people like to tell to fool others into thinking that continuing to pump unabated isn’t a bad thing.
He was clear what his plan and goal were. He’s centre, where Liberals used to be. The NDP is left and PC right.
The easiest way for a conservative to get elected is as a liberal? Same for mulcair and the ndp?
