I don't think he's joking. I think he thinks he's actually helping the Conservative Party get elected in May(?). And guess what, the Conservative Party of Canada is partially to blame for Trump's actions. They spent the last nine years talking shit about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Our rigged, GOP-controlled media in Canada insulted, degraded, and at times lied about Trudeau for the purpose of making Canadians hate him. It worked! Now Trump thinks he can intimate and insult Canadians who, obviously, are gagging to become US Citizens. Wouldn't it be nice if our elected officials regardless of their political lean worked together and were honourable? If Canadians elect Pierre Poilievre to be Prime Minister we deserve what we get.
He is looking outward and saying stupidly outrageous things in-order to distract from all the promises he is about to break domestically. We just need to find some other shiny thing for him to focus on. I don't know, say, fill in the Grand Canyon for more casinos and Trump towers.

Trump Galaxy Brain Theory would suggest this is to give Poilievre an easy means to distance himself from US MAGA heading into the inauguration and a possible Canadian election.
So naturally I’m inclined to instead believe this is just the standard nonsense/pandering, which is now scarily closer to becoming actual US policy than ever. It’s reminding me of how the Musk Twitter takeover felt.

Since he was installed (I have doubts that he was actually legitimately elected the first time, and even stronger doubts about 2024) in 2016, I’ve said that Canada ignores his potential for exactly what he’s been “joking” about in the last month at our peril. We have the longest undefended border between two countries, with the most heavily armed nation on the planet.
There isn’t some magical unity that can protect us in perpetuity. We’ve been complacent because the US government has been populated by more sane people than sociopaths. That is all about to change.
His coup didn’t work in 2021 because of this. And, that should’ve been the end of that story. But the preceding 4 years has seen a slow, steady takeover of SCOTUS, the dismantling of power related to voting: gerrymandering, vote-suppressing legislation, massive penetration of disinformation to the electorate, and consolidation of Social and Mainstream Media platforms into RW hands.
Starting on Jan 20, 2025 we will see a huge portion of the guardrails that kept us safe lit on fire. The sociopaths will move into thousands of roles they couldn’t touch last time, evicting the sane and principled government workers who all helped hold the line. It won’t be a slow roll into fascism but a drop off a cliff. Trump isn’t the main menace—he’s the front for the despotic Christo-fascist hordes following in his wake.
Our undefended border will be too enticing a target for the MAGAs to ignore. It’s the only part of The Handmaid’s Tale Margaret Atwood got wrong.
