We need to talk about Bill 9, Bill 9 and Bill C-9. Yes, these are all different bills (from different governments in this country).
Somehow, they’re all awful — and they all infringe on the freedoms of Canadians, from trans Canadians, to visibly religious Canadians, to Canadians protesting genocide.
Can we agree: no more Bill 9s until we figure out what the hell is going on?
See, Bill 9 in Alberta is the one that invokes the notwithstanding clause to protect horrific anti-trans legislation from court challenges.
Over in Quebec, their Bill 9 is once again doing discrimination under the guise of secularism.
Then there’s the federal Bill C-9, which — as drafted — has prompted several large organizations to warn that it would give police way too much power and could criminalize protest in Canada.
Today, we’re going to talk about all the Bill 9s.
