With everything going on these days, it’s easy to miss when local governments get up to some sketchy stuff.
Take Vancouver, for example, where Mayor Ken Sims is planning to eliminate the city’s sustainability and climate department.
Yes, really.
That’s in the same Vancouver where 117 people died in a heat dome just a couple years back — a city that until now has been known for leading the pack on sustainability.
Luckily for us, my friends at Canada’s National Observer are paying attention, and today I’m partnering with them on a video to tell you all about what they saw.
According to a brand new piece from Marc Fawcett-Atkinson and Natasha Bulowski, a proposal in Mayor Sims’ “Zero Means Zero” 2026 budget is set to gut the city’s entire sustainability and climate team.
The team at the National Observer learned about the planned cuts from their sources familiar with internal conversations. The information was then corroborated by opposition city councillors.
This is a very big deal.
