JD Vance’s Canadian bestie, Jamil Jivani, just announced that he’s heading to Washington.
The Conservative MP made the announcement in a video — one that, notably, had zero Conservative Party branding in sight. Staring at the camera in front of a “Jamil Jivani” sign, Jivani explained how he hopes to set aside partisanship and help the federal government to negotiate a trade deal with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Before the video was done, though, he managed to drop two separate digs about “elbows.” Not sure how the public can trust him to set aside partisanship throughout an entire set of negotiations if he’d can’t even do so for the duration of his own post.
What’s more, it doesn’t appear that Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government asked him to do any of this.
While Carney did confirm that Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc briefed Jivani before the trip, the way he characterized Jivani’s role (or lack thereof) made his feelings about this situation utterly clear.
“Minister LeBlanc gave a briefing to Mr. Jivani who I don’t believe is the trade critic for the opposition, certainly not the minister of international trade nor the prime minister of Canada,” Carney told reporters on Parliament Hill today.
When reporters pressed Carney on why he believes Jivani is heading south of the border, the prime minister replied, “I think it might have something to do with all of you.”
Ouch.
So why is Jamil Jivani doing this, seemingly when nobody — not even, as far as we’ve seen so far, his own party — asked him to do so?
My theory: he’s after Pierre Poilievre’s job.
In today’s video, I’ll explain why.
