As I’m typing these words, Israel is illegally intercepting the Global Sumud Flotilla that is trying to break the siege on Gaza.
The activists on board have been live-streaming the whole thing.
For this interception to be legal, Israel’s blockade has to be legal. For that, it “must not stop the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians.”
This is an illegal enforcement of an illegal blockade. So I reached out to the Canadian government to see what they had to say about it.
Prime Minister' Mark Carney’s office didn’t even acknowledge my email. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand’s office did respond — but only to offload my request onto the public service.
Global Affairs Canada eventually sent me an answer. In it, they confirmed they won’t be helping the six Canadian passport holders on board of the flotilla.
“The Government of Canada is not able to guarantee the safety of Canadian travelers, or to provide them with security and protection abroad,” the government said in its email.
“The decision to travel is personal, and individuals are responsible for their own safety abroad.”
Here’s what else they had to say.
