Alberta’s government just did something that I can only describe as psychopathic politics.
Because what else do you call it when a politician does everything they can to ensure laws are in place — laws that repeated studies show us will result in more trans kids attempting suicide?
And what do you call it when a politician is so determined to move ahead with these deadly laws that they invoke the notwithstanding clause to shield them from court challenges?
This is a foul perversion of the pretence of caring about trans youth.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is using these kids for political points, even though we know — not as a matter of opinion, but a matter of evidence — the deadly consequences of the policies she’s pushing.
Beyond that, this shows an absolute disregard for the charter, for minority rights, and for the spirit of the notwithstanding clause.
