Ahead of Truth and Reconciliation day, Poilievre says 'Christians' face the most hate-based violence

I had to get an assist on this one -- and Pam Palmater was happy to help.

CW: residential school denial. A national Indian Residential School Crisis Line is available to provide support for survivors and those affected. The 24-hour service is available at 1-866-925-4419.

On the eve of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Pierre Poilievre spoke out for the group he says faces the most hate-based violence.

Um, and apparently that group is…Christians?

Yeah, he actually said that — despite it being demonstrably false.

Worse still, he said it while amplifying lies about the number of churches being burned in this country.

That’s a claim residential school deniers have been weaponizing, alleging these fires are the direct result of a “hoax.” The “hoax” in question, to hear them tell it, is the very real discovery of mass graves on residential school sites.

It’s a grotesque thing to deny.

To help me break down these lies, I called for backup. Pam Palmater is a Mi’kmaq lawyer, professor, author, speaker, & podcaster from Eel River Bar First Nation.

Sean Carleton, an Indigenous Studies scholar, also provided his analysis.

Here’s what you need to know.
